JAZZology 101 is both a free weekly jam session and a free online theory class designed to provide young jazz players with a solid foundation to build upon. JAZZology 101 is made possible through the generosity of American Legion Post 11, Brookline.
Kids who gravitate toward jazz generally do so in middle school, when formative experiences have their greatest impact. The weekly Post 11 JAZZology 101 Jam (P11J101J for short) offers them a supportive playing environment in which they have nothing to fear and much to gain. What's more, PhD-level Post 11 JAZZologists provide an inside look at the unspoken rules and customs of the jazz tradition. No previous ensemble experience is required, performing is entirely voluntary, and family and friends are encouraged to become part of the scene. High school jazz players often attend, as well, providing inspiration for their younger peers.
The JAZZology 101 online jazz theory class offers young jazz players a common sense introduction to jazz theory, eschewing the entrenched orthodoxy that makes this subject needlessly baffling. Classes meet once a week on Zoom.

The POSTunderground has upgraded with these uncertain times in mind. Fresh outside air flows constantly through the building courtesy of powerful (yet remarkably quiet) 24" industrial fans. All Post 11 JAZZologists are fully vaccinated.
