The POSTunderground Jazz Institute offers a common sense alternative to established methods of jazz improvisation. Any musician who's been frustrated by the Modal System, or wants to explore a new way of thinking about jazz harmony, can benefit from the two online courses offered.
No Nonsense Jazz Theory
This five-week class covers the system of music and how it works, with the practical goal of interpreting chord symbols effectively. Jazz theory isn't complicated. Any musician should master it quickly and get on with the real work: playing something good!
Instructor: John Purcell
The II-V Cluster
This five-week class builds on principles laid out in the previous class and introduces the II-V Cluster, an overlooked pentatonic scale that's the cornerstone of a new method of improvisation. In practice, the II-V Cluster greatly simplifies playing over chord changes, allowing musicians to navigate any harmonic territory with a minimum of conscious effort.
Instructor: John Purcell
POSTunderground Jazz Institute rates are simple and affordable:
Individual online instruction: $50 per hour
Online classes of two or more: $25 per hour.
Individual instruction is available for both online classes. Musicians think about theory in many different ways, thus it can be more efficient to work one-on-one. Two people, however, is the ideal class size, keeping it small and saving both people money. So sign up with a friend!
